Narrow AI
Core ConceptsAI that is designed and trained for a specific task — as opposed to AGI, which would handle any intellectual task. All current AI is narrow AI.
Narrow AI (also called weak AI) describes every AI system that exists today. These systems excel at specific tasks — playing chess, translating languages, generating images, writing code — but can't transfer their abilities to unrelated domains.
ChatGPT seems general because it handles many language tasks, but it's still narrow: it processes text (and now images/audio) but can't physically manipulate objects, doesn't have long-term memory across sessions (by default), and doesn't truly understand the world the way humans do.
The term 'narrow' isn't a criticism — narrow AI is extraordinarily useful. It's just an important distinction from AGI, which would represent a fundamentally different kind of intelligence.
Real-World Example
Every tool on Coda One is narrow AI — specialized for specific tasks. Midjourney generates images; it can't write your emails. ChatGPT writes your emails; it can't physically paint.
