Use Cases

Saved Images From Websites

Chrome and Firefox save many web images as WebP. If you need the file to open in Photoshop, Word, or a legacy CMS that does not support WebP, convert first.

Submitting to JPG-Only Platforms

Many job sites, university portals, and print services accept only JPG. Converting WebP images keeps your submission compatible without hunting for the original file.

Printing & Desktop Publishing

InDesign, older versions of Photoshop, and most print-ready workflows expect JPG or TIFF. WebP is a web format and converting it is the cleanest path to print.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my browser save this as WebP?
WebP is a modern image format created by Google that produces files 25-35% smaller than JPG at the same quality. Many websites serve images in WebP to speed up load times. Your browser saves them in the same format the site provided.
Does converting WebP to JPG reduce quality?
Both formats are lossy, so conversion involves a decode-then-re-encode step that loses some detail. At JPG quality 85-95, the difference is not visually noticeable on most images. The resulting file is usually 1.5-2x larger than the original WebP.
Can I convert animated WebP?
This tool extracts the first frame of an animated WebP and converts it to a static JPG. The animation is not preserved. For animations, convert to GIF or MP4 using a dedicated video tool.
What about WebP with transparency?
WebP supports transparency but JPG does not. Transparent areas are filled with white during conversion. If you need to preserve transparency, convert to PNG instead.
Are WebP and AVIF the same?
No. Both are modern web formats, but AVIF (2019) generally produces smaller files than WebP (2010) at the same quality. AVIF support is newer and less universal. Converting either to JPG produces the same kind of compatibility-friendly output.
