Questions
What people ask before they use this tool.
How does GIF compression work?
FFmpeg WebAssembly re-encodes your GIF with optimized color palettes and fewer colors. This reduces file size while maintaining visual quality. All processing in your browser.
How much smaller will my GIF be?
Typically 30-70% smaller depending on content. Simple animations often compress more than complex ones.
Does it reduce quality?
Slightly. The tool reduces the color palette and may reduce frame rate. At Medium setting the difference is barely noticeable.
What compression levels are available?
Light (10-30% reduction, minimal quality loss), Medium (30-50%), and Heavy (50-70%, noticeable quality loss).
Is my GIF uploaded?
No. FFmpeg runs in your browser. GIF files are processed locally during compression and are not uploaded to our servers.
Why does the first compression take longer?
FFmpeg WASM (~31MB) downloads on first use, then cached.
Can I compress multiple GIFs?
One at a time. Download, then upload the next.
Does it change the dimensions?
Medium and Heavy levels may downscale if the GIF is larger than 480px wide. Light keeps original dimensions.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes, for typical GIF sizes.
What is the file size limit?
Depends on device. Most handle GIFs up to 50MB.
How does this compare to ezgif optimize?
Similar results. Ours runs locally, no upload. ezgif has more fine-tuning options.
Can I preview the compressed result?
Yes. The compressed GIF plays inline so you can compare quality.
Should I convert to MP4 instead?
If file size is critical, MP4 is 80-95% smaller than GIF. Use our GIF to MP4 tool for even smaller files.
Is it free?
Yes. The browser tool is free to use, and signup is not required to start.
Can I pay with crypto?
Video tools are free. Try our Video Compressor too. AI writing tools accept crypto from $9.99/month.
