Outlier AI is a freelance platform operated by Scale AI that pays subject-matter experts to train and evaluate AI models through Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF). The platform connects domain experts — including programmers, mathematicians, writers, linguists, and researchers — with AI companies that need high-quality human feedback to improve their large language models.

The core work on Outlier involves three main task types: rating and ranking AI-generated responses to determine which outputs are more accurate and helpful, creating expert-level prompts and ideal responses that models learn from, and multi-modal tasks involving images, audio, and video content. These human evaluations create the training signals that frontier AI models use to become more accurate, aligned, and useful.

Outlier has built a network of over one million experts across 40+ domains spanning STEM, coding, spoken languages, writing, law, and more. The platform offers flexible remote work with no fixed schedule — most experts work 5 to 10 hours per week, though up to 40 hours is available. Pay rates range from $15 to $50 per hour depending on the domain, with math and coding projects commanding the highest rates. Payments are processed weekly via PayPal or AirTM.

The platform includes an active community with support channels and "War Rooms" where experts can get real-time feedback on specific tasks. Onboarding involves identity verification, expertise screening, and project-specific training. Outlier has paid over $100 million to experts across 18+ countries, making it one of the largest platforms in the AI data labeling and RLHF industry.
