FAQ

How do I specify which pages to extract?
Use "Extract pages" mode to visually pick pages from thumbnails, "By range" to type ranges like "1-3, 5, 8-10", or "Every N pages" to split evenly. Each selection creates a separate output file.
Can I split a PDF into individual pages?
Yes! In "Every N pages" mode, set N to 1 and every page becomes its own PDF. Or use "Extract pages" and select pages one by one.
Can I download all split files at once?
Yes. After splitting, click "Download as ZIP" to get all output files in a single ZIP archive. You can also download individual files.
Is there a page limit?
No hard limit. The tool handles PDFs with hundreds of pages. Very large files may take longer depending on your device.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. All processing happens in your browser using JavaScript. Your files never leave your device.
What happens to the original PDF after splitting?
Nothing. The tool only reads your original file to create the split outputs — it does not modify or delete the original. Your source file stays exactly as it was on your device.
How is this different from Adobe Acrobat?
Adobe Acrobat requires a paid subscription and processes files on Adobe servers. Coda One splits PDFs locally in your browser for free — no account, no upload, no subscription.
Can I split a password-protected PDF?
The tool attempts to load encrypted PDFs using the ignoreEncryption option. In most cases, splitting will work. The output files will not retain the original encryption. To re-protect them, use our PDF Protect tool.
Can I merge the split files back together?
Yes. Use our PDF Merger to recombine any of the split output files into a single document.
Does splitting preserve links and annotations?
Yes. Each output file retains the page content, annotations, and formatting from the original. Internal links that point to pages outside the split range will no longer work in the output file.
Can I use this on my phone?
Yes. The tool works on any modern mobile browser. Thumbnail selection and page range input are fully touch-friendly.
What output file names are generated?
Output files are named based on the original filename plus the page range. For example, splitting "report.pdf" by pages 1-3 produces "report_pages1-3.pdf".
Can I split a PDF into chapters?
Use the "By range" mode and enter each chapter's page range separated by commas (e.g., "1-15, 16-42, 43-60"). Each range becomes a separate PDF file.
