ImageFX

ImageFX is Google's AI image generation tool, part of the AI Test Kitchen experimental suite. Powered by Google's Imagen model (now Imagen 3), it generates high-quality images from text descriptions. The tool is free to use with a Google account and produces images that are competitive with leading generators like Midjourney and DALL-E 3.

A distinctive feature of ImageFX is its "expressive chips" interface — clickable keyword suggestions that appear alongside the prompt input, allowing users to quickly modify and iterate on their prompts. This makes it easier for beginners to explore different styles, compositions, and variations without needing to master prompt engineering. Users can click chips to swap out elements like lighting, style, or mood.

ImageFX generates images at high resolution with strong photorealism capabilities. It handles a wide range of styles from photographic to illustrated, artistic to abstract. Google has implemented SynthID watermarking on all generated images, embedding an invisible digital watermark that identifies the content as AI-generated. The tool also applies safety filters to prevent generation of harmful content.

As a Google product, ImageFX benefits from Google's massive compute infrastructure and ongoing Imagen model improvements. It is available in select countries and requires a Google account. The tool positions Google in the consumer AI image generation space alongside Midjourney, DALL-E, and Stable Diffusion.
