FAQ
How are words counted?
Words are separated by spaces and newlines. Hyphenated words count as one word. Numbers and abbreviations each count as one word.
How is reading time calculated?
We use an average reading speed of 238 words per minute (the commonly accepted average for adults reading non-fiction). Speaking time uses 150 words per minute.
How is the readability score calculated?
We use the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level formula, which estimates the U.S. school grade level needed to understand the text. A score of 8 means an 8th grader can understand it. Lower scores mean easier reading.
Does it count Chinese/Japanese characters?
Yes. CJK characters are counted individually since they don't use spaces between words. The tool detects CJK text automatically.
What are "unique words"?
Unique words is the count of distinct words regardless of how many times they appear. A high unique-to-total ratio indicates diverse vocabulary.
What does the keyword density table show?
The keyword density table shows the top 10 most frequent meaningful words (excluding common stop words like "the", "and", "is"), with counts and percentage of total words. Useful for SEO analysis.
